Following many years of hard work and planning The Isle of Luing Community Trust have opened a new heritage centre in the village of Cullipool on the Isle of Luing.
The £1.2M Atlantic Islands Centre includes a genealogy, geology and ecology exhibitions and research facilities, a café, shop and work spaces. The bright, flexible spaces will be used to host concerts, conferences and social events.
The Isle of Luing is located in the Firth of Lorne, south of Oban and is one of the Scottish west coast ‘slate islands’ known as the ‘islands that roofed the world’. Glasgow and Iona Cathedrals were roofed with Luing slate.
The new Atlantic Islands Centre sits on the edge of an old flooded slate quarry pool and the building has been designed to reflect the engine shed and quarrymen’s cottages that once stood there and from where Luing slate was transported around the world. Large expanses of glass flood light into a bright and open interior. A palette of traditional materials allows the centre to sit very comfortably within the village.
