Project Description

Following extensive refurbishment, the works within the Anatomy Department at the University of Glasgow are now complete to provide a resource for existing and future professionals to develop their skills in a safe and simulated environment.

The accommodation was contained within a Grade B listed building with a later 3 storey extension having been added to the rear that comprised offices, lecture theatre, museum, labs and teaching spaces.

Our project involved the complete refurbishment of certain areas of the department with a minor upgrade of the remainder in advance of a larger refurbishment project in subsequent capital programmes. Essentially, the project improved the building’s internal condition and the internal layouts were remodelled to create new teaching areas, laboratories, offices and toilets together with an anatomy CPD suite for renting out to high profile medical teams.  A sympathetic approach was required by the design team given the listed nature of the building and the desire to retain many of the existing features.

In addition to this, the existing mechanical and electrical services were overhauled as these were based on obsolete or out dated technology that required to be updated to meet current standards and regulations i.e. installation of new fire alarms, emergency lighting, water pipework and escape signage. A wide scale asbestos removal was also required in advance of the new works commencing.

This was a complex project due to the requirement to keep the building live during the works as well as having to deal with the presence of asbestos on site, a tight and constrained, existing site and the complicated building services arrangements.

In order to reduce the impact on teaching, the works were carried out in two separate phases so that important labs and lecture theatres could be completed over a shorter space of time and programmed to occur during times when there were less students on site.

CRGP provided QS and cost management services as part of their framework agreement with University of Glasgow. The phase 1 works were completed by Morris & Spottiswood and the phase 2 works were completed by D H Allan.
