Bob Turnbull

Bob Turnbull, Director in our Project Management Division, also sits on the Board of Cube Housing Association and has recently been appointed to the Board of Glasgow Housing Association.

Bob is finance and regeneration convenor at Cube HA, and these two committees have managed the partnership with Scottish Gas and SSE to deliver the £27m district heating and over-cladding scheme to 11 high-rise blocks on the Wyndford Estate in Maryhill, Glasgow.

Up to 1900 homes will benefit from this innovative scheme which will provide low-cost, energy-efficient heating and hot water for residents, as well as making their homes more energy-efficient.

At the heart of the Wyndford scheme will be a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) engine. The CHP uses gas to produce both electricity and hot water in a highly efficient way. The CHP will be housed within a new energy centre at the edge of the estate. The energy centre will also house gas boilers and a large thermal store (hot water tank).

The energy centre will provide all the hot water and heating for the 1527 tenanted properties as well as the potential to supply up to 400 privately owned properties on the estate through a 5km network of brand new underground hot water pipes.

The electricity generated by the CHP will be exported to the local grid.

The project will also see:

  • Every tenanted home fitted out with a new, modern, efficient central heating system
  • Every owner offered the opportunity to join in with the scheme
  • The majority of the tower blocks overclad to further increase energy efficiency and get the best from lower cost heating.

It is also estimated that as much as 7000 tonnes of carbon emissions will be saved every year.

Work is due to finish on the Wyndford district heating project by the end of 2012.
