Phase 1 Coltness High School Complete

CRGP Ltd providing Architectural Services to the Graham Construction Team for the re-modelling of Coltness High School as part of North Lanarkshire Council’s ‘Schools and Centres 21′ Framework.

Coltness High School Phase I handed over to the client in June 2011

Coltness High School, a £25.70m secondary school project will not only provide secondary education for 800 pupils but its innovative facilities will also be available, and integral, to the wider community, achieving the client vision of “places and spaces that inspire”.

The Coltness High School remodelling project creates two blocks of similar massing which house the technical and teaching areas with the new west wing, visually defined by a strong brickwork grid, lying a full storey lower.

The existing assembly hall, designed to accommodate community activities, is reinvented and becomes part of the heart of the school along with the adjacent reception, social and dining areas which themselves lie under a dramatic new curving roof; the copper-clad façade of the administration block providing a visual focal point for the entire project.

Featuring teaching spaces arranged across five levels, the completed building aims to achieve a ‘Very Good’ rating under BREEAM, environmental features including a natural ventilation strategy, significantly increased insulation levels, solar control glazing, ground source heat pumps, bio-mass boilers and rainwater harvesting.

The completed Phase I works of the new west wing comprised the highly technical teaching spaces including Science, Home Economics, Computing, Vocational and Practical Craft. Enhanced PE facilities include twin games halls and the Dance/ Fitness Studio, with associated changing facilities. The completed works also included the transformed assembly hall along with the new kitchen and dining area.

Phase II is currently underway, with final completion anticipated April 2012.
