Project Description
The completed developments at Richmondshire Lines, Catterick Garrison, are a central element of the single living accommodation modernisation (SLAM) programme currently being undertaken by the MOD to provide high quality accommodation for services personnel enlisted within all divisions of the Armed Services. The projects involved the modular construction of 23 separate buildings in a variety of layouts; providing 1428 single person en-suite bed spaces for Junior Rank soldiers. The master planning also involved the construction of a new Junior Ranks Mess Facility and a new combined Officers Mess and Accommodation building. The buildings were designed with Modern Methods of Construction at the fore. One of the many innovations of this project was the development of the 5-storey self-supporting modular accommodation block, a first for Project SLAM.
The buildings are arranged around landscaped courtyards through which Waithwith Road forms a central tree-lined avenue. Extensive landscaping is an intrinsic part of the project, incorporating both new and retained trees, shrubs and vegetation. The diversity of forms, levels and materials provide visual interest, encouraging a sense of place. The overall project provides over 1500 en-suite single living accommodation bedspaces along with a two new mess facilities.
